Would The Last HONEST Reporter Please Turn On The Lights?

Here is piece from a small newspaper. It is the third thing I have read in the last three days where a Democrat is speaking out in a fair and common sense manner for the reporting of facts regardless of party. Bravo!!

Remember when our media actually provided the checks and balance through tireless research and honestand truthful reporting? Please read the following--maybe there is yet some hope.---
Would the Last Honest Reporter Please Turn On the Lights?

by Orson Scott Card

Editor's note: Orson Scott Card is a Democrat and a newspaper columnist, and in this opinion piece he takes on both while lamenting the current state of journalism.

October 09, 2008

An open letter to the local daily paper - almost every local daily paper in America:

I remember reading All the President's Men and thinking: That's journalism. You do what it takes to get the truth and you lay it before the public, because the public has a right to know.

This housing crisis didn't come out of nowhere. It was not a vague emanation of the evil Bush administration.

It was a direct result of the political decision, back in the late 1990s, to loosen the rules of lending so that home loans would be more accessible to poor people. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were authorized to approve risky loans.

What is a risky loan? It's a loan that the recipient is likely not to be able to repay.

The goal of this rule change was to help the poor - which especially would help members of minority groups. But how does it help these people to give them a loan that they can't repay? They get into a house, yes, but when they can't make the payments, they lose the house - along with their credit rating.

They end up worse off than before.

This was completely foreseeable and in fact many people did foresee it. One political party, in Congress and in the executive branch, tried repeatedly to tighten up the rules. The other party blocked every such attempt and tried to loosen them.

Furthermore, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were making political contributions to the very members of Congress who were allowing them to make irresponsible loans. (Though why quasi-federal agencies were allowed to do so baffles me. It's as if the Pentagon were allowed to contribute to the political campaigns of congressmen who support increasing their budget.)

Isn't there a story here? Doesn't journalism require that you who produce our daily paper tell the truth about who brought us to a position where the only way to keep confidence in our economy was a $700 billion bailout? Aren't you supposed to follow the money and see which politicians were benefiting personally from the deregulation of mortgage lending?

I have no doubt that if these facts had pointed to the Republican Party or to John McCain as the guilty parties, you would be treating it as a vast scandal. "Housing-gate," no doubt. Or "Fannie-gate."

Instead, it was Sen. Christopher Dodd and Congressman Barney Frank, both Democrats, who denied that there were any problems, who refused Bush administration requests to set up a regulatory agency to watch over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and who were still pushing for these agencies to go even further in promoting subprime mortgage loans almost up to the minute they failed.

As Thomas Sowell points out in a TownHall.com essay entitled "Do Facts Matter?" (http://snipurl.com/457to): "Alan Greenspan warned them four years ago. So did the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers to the President. So did Bush's Secretary of the Treasury."

These are facts. This financial crisis was completely preventable. The party that blocked any attempt to prevent it was ... the Democratic Party. The party that tried to prevent it was ... the Republican Party.

Yet when Nancy Pelosi accused the Bush administration and Republican deregulation of causing the crisis, you in the press did not hold her to account for her lie. Instead, you criticized Republicans who took offense at this lie and refused to vote for the bailout!

What? It's not the liar, but the victims of the lie who are to blame?

Now let's follow the money ... right to the presidential candidate who is the number two recipient of campaign contributions from Fannie Mae.

And after Fred Raines, the CEO of Fannie Mae who made $90 million while running it into the ground, was fired for his incompetence, one presidential candidate's campaign actually consulted him for advice on housing.

If that presidential candidate had been John McCain, you would have called it a major scandal and we would be getting stories in your paper every day about how incompetent and corrupt he was.

But instead, that candidate was Barack Obama, and so you have buried this story, and when the McCain campaign dared to call Raines an "adviser" to the Obama campaign - because that campaign had sought his advice - you actually let Obama's people get away with accusing McCain of lying, merely because Raines wasn't listed as an official adviser to the Obama campaign.

You would never tolerate such weasely nit-picking from a Republican.

If you who produce our local daily paper actually had any principles, you would be pounding this story, because the prosperity of all Americans was put at risk by the foolish, short-sighted, politically selfish and possibly corrupt actions of leading Democrats, including Obama.

If you who produce our local daily paper had any personal honor, you would find it unbearable to let the American people believe that somehow Republicans were to blame for this crisis.

There are precedents. Even though President Bush and his administration never said that Iraq sponsored or was linked to 9/11, you could not stand the fact that Americans had that misapprehension - so you pounded us with the fact that there was no such link. (Along the way, you created the false impression that Bush had lied to them and said that there was a connection.)

If you had any principles, then surely right now, when the American people are set to blame President Bush and John McCain for a crisis they tried to prevent, and are actually shifting to approve of Barack Obama because of a crisis he helped cause, you would be laboring at least as hard to correct that false impression.

Your job, as journalists, is to tell the truth. That's what you claim you do, when you accept people's money to buy or subscribe to your paper.

But right now, you are consenting to or actively promoting a big fat lie - that the housing crisis should somehow be blamed on Bush, McCain and the Republicans. You have trained the American people to blame everything bad - even bad weather - on Bush, and they are responding as you have taught them to.

If you had any personal honor, each reporter and editor would be insisting on telling the truth - even if it hurts the election chances of your favorite candidate.

Because that's what honorable people do. Honest people tell the truth even when they don't like the probable consequences. That's what honesty means. That's how trust is earned.

Barack Obama is just another politician, and not a very wise one. He has revealed his ignorance and naiveté time after time - and you have swept it under the rug, treated it as nothing.

Meanwhile, you have participated in the borking of Sarah Palin, reporting savage attacks on her for the pregnancy of her unmarried daughter - while you ignored the story of John Edwards' own adultery for many months.

So I ask you now: Do you have any standards at all? Do you even know what honesty means?

Is getting people to vote for Barack Obama so important that you will throw away everything that journalism is supposed to stand for?

You might want to remember the way the National Organization of Women (NOW) threw away their integrity by supporting Bill Clinton despite his well-known pattern of sexual exploitation of powerless women. Who listens to NOW anymore? We know they stand for nothing; they have no principles.

That's where you are right now.

It's not too late. You know that if the situation were reversed, and the truth would damage McCain and help Obama, you would be moving heaven and earth to get the true story out there.

If you want to redeem your honor, you will swallow hard and make a list of all the stories you would print if it were McCain who had been getting money from Fannie Mae, McCain whose campaign had consulted with its discredited former CEO, McCain who had voted against tightening its lending practices.

Then you will print them, even though every one of those true stories will point the finger of blame at the reckless Democratic Party, which put our nation's prosperity at risk so they could feel good about helping the poor, and lay a fair share of the blame at Obama's door.

You will also tell the truth about John McCain: that he tried, as a senator, to do what it took to prevent this crisis. You will tell the truth about President Bush: that his administration tried more than once to get Congress to regulate lending in a responsible way.

This was a Congress-caused crisis, beginning during the Clinton administration, with Democrats leading the way into the crisis and blocking every effort to get out of it in a timely fashion.

If you at our local daily newspaper continue to let Americans believe - and vote as if - President Bush and the Republicans caused the crisis, then you are joining in that lie.

If you do not tell the truth about the Democrats - including Barack Obama - and do so with the same energy you would use if the miscreants were Republicans - then you are not journalists by any standard.

You're just the public relations machine of the Democratic Party, and it's time you were all fired and real journalists brought in, so that we can actually have a daily newspaper in our city.

WE Older Republicans & OUR FEELINGS On This Election

Chuck: Go right ahead. You have my permission. I'm not sure how other people my agefeel, but these last 2 or 3 weeks have been devastating for me. I know John McCain &Sarah Palin, & our Fox News people like Bill O'Reilly have done all they can.Seemingly sensible people that I have gotten to know, have shown during thiscampaign season have shown the most reprehensible judgement recently. I'm talkingabout their political stance. Back in my Brazoria County days I would have creditedit to youth, & inexperience. But now I constantly run across people with grey &white hair leaning to the left. It makes me wonder if I'm out of touch, or the worldhas passed me by, & I didn't even notice it. My wife & I meeting up with all the people of WVRG has been an absolute life linefor me. I've always known prayers were answered, & you guys are the latest example.Everett --- On Thu, 10/16/08, Chuck Peterson <cpeterson888@txwinet.com> wrote:From: Chuck Peterson <cpeterson888@txwinet.com>Subject: Your NOTE on your feelingsTo: "Everett Connie Kaminsky" <skykam1937@yahoo.com>Date: Thursday, October 16, 2008, 10:32 AM Nice to see you last night, Everett. I think our guys DID GOOD!! I went over to the Rec Room at 7A Ranch, and we two dozen or sohad a good time watching the debate, eating pizza and snacks and CHEERING for McCain with his ZINGERS!! I had Joyce on my left,Judge Henry and George Morovitch on the right. WE were the FRONTROWERS, ha. Say, your write up was so good, and I know that is the THOUGHTS that many in our 65 and over group have at this point in our life. IFyou would like, I would be happy to send that out on Wimberley Taxpayer, but ONLY with your permission? Thanks, Chuck

One Person's VIEWPOINT in WVRG

Chuck: As a 71yr old senior citizen now, I learned long before I retired, to takeextra long term precautions if a project(namely this election) doesn't turn outright for me. I'm not giving up(that'll never happen), however, it makes me wonderwhat my lifestyle, along with others, will be like next year & years after that.Should I become a recluse, grow a beard, lose contact with friends & especiallyfamily down towards the coast, or what. I wonder how many other older conservatives, seeking financial transparency in our national financial institutions, & higherintegrity among our Congressional leaders, will have to change the way they go abouttheir everyday lives, & still be able to hold their heads up. I know it'll be hardfor me. I'm upset, since some of the friends & acquaintences we've gotten to know out here, have shown definite liberal bias, & I'm having an extremely hard time maintainingeven a short non-commital convesation with them. Start cultivating a new circle ofacquaintences, & even change, or drop some of the groups we've joined. I wonder howmany other people are in this predicament. When I see the sign we're all so familiarwith: "Change you can believe in", I think to myself, "Some things I can neverchange, as it's a part of me as sure as my sore back". .Back many years ago, when Iwas a Republican precinct chairman down in Brazoria County(Pearland area) otherprecinct chairmen & I, thru networking, could identify liberal Democraticbusinessmen & we all vowed to not trade with them at all. Well, that didn't seem todo much good. This 71 yr old retired hospital adminstration worker, part-time life insurance &long term health rep, used to be part time farmer, & now guitar picker is more thana little fed up with the slanted media coverage, sheer absolute ignorance of so manyotherwise normal people. I'm just 2nd guessing where all this cr-p will take us..Everett --- On Wed, 10/15/08, Chuck Peterson <cpeterson888@txwinet.com> wrote:From: Chuck Peterson <cpeterson888@txwinet.com>Subject: Fw: PLEASE CHECK OUT & PASS ON, IF YOU SO CHOOSE

INCIDENT @ ACE TODAY!!!, April 6, 2007

This AM. Dale Dugger (retired Police Officer from Houston) was my BODY GUARD, as I told him, when he arrived at ACE this am. to SELL tickets for the EASTER Community Breakfast from 10 - 12 noon.

Lo and behold who SHOWS UP!! Dale, this is Jim Evers the SUPER's husband coming. He bought one ticket and I said, you're NOT going to buy a ticket for your wife? I really do NOT remember his answer. Dale and I introduced ourselves as we usually do. He was LOOKING at me KIND OF LIKE - DON'T I KNOW YOU?? I really THINK that HE HAD SEEN A GHOST, ha!!

I THINK he started off with, my wife would certainly like to meet with you. I don't think that would do any good at this point. WHY?? Well, after the meeting in Jan. when they messed with Dr. Jim - THAT ABOUT DID IT WITH OUR GROUP of NO BOND people. I said, in the earlier meeting Pigg even mentioned that we shouldn't even be discussing this, WE HAVE MORE IMPORTANT BUSINESS TO DO. Well, HE WAS RIGHT, for once. Yet, in the second meeting when Dr. Jim was outsted HE HAD THE GAUL to take the VP position. AND, PIGG shouldn't even be on the board AFTER THE BEER PARTY HE HELD last year!!

Jim said, I suppose you are having people sign the petition in your folder there?? NO, I am showing Dale my fuel business info as you can plainly see. Are we doing any PETITION signing Dale? No, we aren't, said Dale - selling tickets and talking.

He mentioned about our sheet being in error about the academics DUE to there only being a few schools that passed. Well, that is TRUE about there NOT being many schools achieving. That was ONLY one year PLUS I am NOT the expert in that area. You see Jim, we have about 5 or 6 people who are EXPERTS in their area of dealing with WISD. I am only the facilitator to bring them all together - The Silent Majority. SOMEONE has to do it!!

Guess you do NOT know that a group of NO BOND people started meeting last Dec. with three of the school board members to iron things out: Melissa Young, David Junkin and Dr. Jim. We were doing VERY WELL in our communication. Than the school board meeting in Jan. when Dr. Jim was axed - THAT DID IT!!

He kept on pressing that I meet with the SUPER. Well, Mickey met with her and that did NOT really produce anything of substance. No, I don't think that will be necessary. I am NOT going to change your bind or her mind; AND, you sure as heck are NOT going to CHANGE MINE. I think you just need to MOVE ON and we will see what happens.

My wife talked to the Mayor who was going to talk to you, Jim said. Well I saw him Monday night and he did NOT say anything. I really don't know what good that is going to do I DON'T take any marching ORDERS from the Mayor in this area. My only ALLEGIANCE is to the ONE up ABOVE - that is what counts. He kind of rolled his eyes on that one, folks.

I think I also mentioned about receiving the email from Gibson Consulting from Chayenne about meeting next week and that I sent out an email to the group BUT have heard back from only one so far. Will just have to wait and see what happens with the group I said.

He was sill UPSET because we call his wife MAID MARIAN. WHY do you have to do that, she has a doctorate? I said that someone in the group came up with it, NOT me, and it stuck with us. What kind of education background do you have?? Like I told you the other day, my Phd is from the EIB Institute. Well, he must have looked it up because he said, well, I am a Republican too. You sure don't ACT like one, I said. WELL, do you have ANY CHILDREN in the school system?? I told you before that I did NOT, BUT that does NOT mean I am NOT active in supporting the kids. I mentioned about doing the EXTRA paper for last years STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME which he acknowledged. Dale said that he was part of the 60 and over group at the football games that support the kids too.

Somewhere in the above conversation, I did say that I do carry the LOCK BOX in the trunk which I went to the trunk and produced that for Jim. He seemed to be disqusted.

After he left, I told Dale, you watch, he will go home, call his wife and probably have people CALL RICHARD at the store to say, THOSE PEOPLE or PETERSON are having people sign THE PETITION while selling tickets. No, he wouldn't do that, said Dale.

Within the hour, Richard and an associate, Gary, came out. GEE, Richard, I KNOW WHY you are here, I said. I think Richard spoke first, YOU ALL aren't doing anything with a petition here for sign up? WE HAVE HAD A FEW PEOPLE CALL that said you were doing it. Dale, are we DOING anything with people about signing a PETITION?? No, we aren't. I said, didn't I tell you Dale, that Jim would go and call people and HAVE THEM CALL RICHARD?? Yep, you did. Well, there he goes again, RICHARD, just LYING to get back at me in particular. We just had to check, Richard said.

MAN, CAN YOU ALL BELIEVE THIS GUY. WHAT a DUFFUS or whatever!! A little HATEFUL DO YOU ALL NOT THINK??

RUMOR from THE Chili Cook Off, Feb. 17, 2007

This is THE RUMOR that percipitated the EVENTUAL DOWNFALL OF THE WISD
SUPERINTENDENT

Subject: RUMOR from THE Chili Cook Off

Marlys and I just got back from the Chili Cook Off at the VFW. Boy, there is a rumor going around about Maid Marion that the Bond WILL BE DEAD UPON ARRIVAL due to what happened last Monday Night at the WISD Board Meeting and the "preception" that she was the one who orchestrated Dr. Jim's ouster, the Land Deal that she was trying to pull in the last failed Bond and than probably the undeserved firing of Gene Ritter, a volunteer at the WFD, by Carroll Czichos. I sat one over from Gene and while he should not have been making a few of the remarks he did to Clint and I while in WFD shirt, we think those claiming what he did had ulterior motives going back to a dance teacher that was fired and Gene's daughter being part of that dance team. As I understand it, the teacher wanted to appeal it to the State but Maid Marion would not let her. So, DO WE have some retribution here. MOST LIKELY. STUDENTS, PARENTS and TEACHERS do NOT cross certain Principals or they are sent to MAID MARION for discipline or what for. What I am hearing is that the PEOPLE WANT HER GONE - NO BOND WHILE SHE IS HERE. About 5 people approached me IF I had heard different parts of the above. Even talked to Gene who was there for some verification.

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2008

ONE month from TODAY, Nov. 5th, we will wake up and MAYBE know
who OUR next President is. But, WHO KNOWS, it could be ANOTHER
CRAZY situation!! Thousands of LAWYERS are already heading for
Florida and probably other states - sent out by the ACLU or ACORN,
right!!!

I feel that this is TOO IMPORTANT an ELECTION for US not to
comment on and have a dialogue. There are many in our WVRG like
Frank, Linda, Nick, Everett, Mary Joe and others VERY CAPABLE of
producing some EXCELLENT oratory on this election. Of course, IF
we were to send them into the VIEW, they would NOT be published.
So, HERE IS YOUR CHANCE to share your political thoughts - mainly,
on the MOST LEFTIST LIBERAL in the Senate of the U.S. of America,
Barrack Hussein OBAMA.

This is an ELECTION, WE MUST WIN, IF WE ARE TO CONTINUE
OUR WAY OF LIFE IN THIS COUNTRY. For those of you who have
read his books or those written about him or have studied him by way
of conservative commentators, OBAMA will PUT US IN A SOCIALIST,
IF NOT A SOCIALIST-MARXIST SYSTEM by the end of his FIRST
TERM. And, he will be able to do this with the help of a DEMO Senate
and Congress which we will NOT be able to gain this time around. WE
would LOSE EVERYTHING that President Ronald Reagan did for us
when he was able to BRING DOWN THE BERLIN WALL. Most of us,
NEVER THOUGHT that we would see this IN OUR LIFETIME, right.

This guy's ASSOCIATION of FRIENDS and LACK OF TRUTHFUL-
NESS should leave any "sound of mind person" to think that HIS
CHARACTER is such that he would DO GREAT HARM as COMMAN-
DER IN CHIEF!! DEFINITELY, "NOT FIT FOR DUTY"!!

WE, of the CONSERVATIVE and CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE con-
viction realize that the people on the "other side" DO NOT THINK
ANYWAY NEAR THE WAY WE DO. So, WHAT GIVES? My personal
opinion coming from a Christian Conservative viewpoint is quite easy,
since ONLY 20% of the DEMOS CLAIM to be Christians, this leaves a
lack of MORAL & ETHICAL FIBER MISSING in their life. And, IT
SHOWS in the way the DEMOS (DEMOLITION TEAM, I prefer) have
taken PRAYER out of the Public School system in our country and have
taken away the SANCTITY of HUMAN LIFE (through OUR TAX
DOLLARS going to PLANNED PARENTHOOD).

On the other hand, 80% of REPUBLICANS CLAIM to be Christians. WE
still BELIEVE that OUR COUNTRY was FOUNDED UNDER GOD and it
shows in most all the writings that have been passed down in our 200
year history. The reference to GOD is all around us in our GOVERNMENT
BUILDINGS. As WE ALL KNOW, the DEMOS are trying to tear down
these symbols of yesteryear and change OUR BOOKS to show THEIR
SLANT, especially through using the LIBERAL JUDGES in our courts. WE
ALL KNOW about the OUTRAGEOUS DECISIONS that have come out of
the Ninth Court in California. Fortunately, most of them have been OVER-
TURNED by the SUPREME COURT. But, this will NOT BE FOR LONG IF
OBAMA has HIS WAY folks!!

WE were NOT A PERFECT UNION than, and we are NOT one now, more
like 35% Republicans, 35% Demos and 30% Independents. With the "DRIVE
BY MEDIA" doing their POLLING (FAIR & BALANCED, I don't think so),
they would have us believe, that the ELECTION WAS OVER!! THEY STILL
THINK THAT THEY ARE RUNNING AGAINST GEORGE W, do they NOT?
HAVE YOU EVER seen such HATRED from a PARTY? Could it be BECAUSE
President BUSH is a BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN? I THINK SO, because of
their HATRED TOWARD ANYTHING DEALING WITH RELIGION. You
even have to wonder about these 20% people in their party (Christians). I
know several people in this community that fall into that category. Having
been a BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN for the last 25 years IS THE GREATEST
EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE, and I know others would say the same thing.

The problem I saw in the BUSH presidency was that he was UNEQUALLY
YOKED with a man, Dick Cheney, who I NEVER saw as a COMMITTED
CHRISTIAN. I could be wrong but that is my perception. Anytime you are
UNEQUALLY YOKED with a partner, there will be problems down the road.
I would put Karl Rove in there also. It is the old saying, "where two or more
are gathered in MY NAME, there will be STRENGTH" in what you do. IF
you have ever been to a "SPIRIT FILLED" church you know what I mean.
The PRAISE & WORSHIP in such a church will make your knees want to
kneel and you will feel like you are in the presence of the LORD (ask me, and
I will tell you where that church is as I plan to REVISIT it later in Nov.). I
think that President BUSH did an EXCELLENT JOB after 911, and we all
saw how the Stock Market recovered WITHOUT ANY BAILOUT. But, as
many of us know, it was VERY DISAPPOINTING the way that he took his
base for granted in the two elections.

I am afraid that John McCain might be doing the same thing. NOT too many
of us were very excited about his run for the presidency UNTIL he chose his
VP, Sarah Palin. WE ALL SEEMED TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS LADY!!
I mean, even RUSH was going to send a contribution into the RNC!! She has
most certainly UPHELD her side of the ticket IF ONLY John could have come
through the other night. He had his chances. The WARRIOR in him NEEDS
to come out next week!!! This DEBATE with Tom Brokaw hosting was
ANOTHER "drive by media" set up. NO QUESTIONS on Immigration, Gun
Control, and Infanticide - GIVE ME A BREAK!!

You folks that have children and grandchildren and even relatives that fall on
the "OTHER SIDE" believing that OBAMA is THEIR SAVIOR, PRAY FOR
THEM. WE have been doing that in our Sunday School Class for a month or so.

AND REMEMBER, "IT IS ONLY WHEN GOOD PEOPLE DO NOTHING,
THAT BAD/EVIL PEOPLE SUCCEED".

JUST SOME THOUGHTS.
